Leading Through Crisis Without Losing Yourself

Viv Grant took on a challenging school turnaround at 31, while pregnant, and years later faced a life-altering diagnosis. In this conversation with Kathryn and Liz she talks about how early words shaped her inner critic, what happened when her "be strong" mask finally gave way, and how intuitive art and self-compassion opened a path to healing.

Viv is the founder and director of Integrity Coaching, which supports school leaders across the UK. As a headteacher she led a London primary school out of Special Measures, and her latest book, Learning to Walk in the Dark, grew from her own journey through cancer.

"Self-care is not a selfish act. Asking ourselves what we need, it's an act of kindness."

Kathryn's gift to teachers, wherever they are in the world

Every Teacher Matters asks what would change if we invested in the people at the heart of education. With humour, stories and research, it offers teachers a gentle hand back to their own hearts, and through them, their students.

Questions

Is the book really free?

Yes. The book and the Kindness Band gift set are Kathryn's gift. You pay the postage only: £4.99 in the UK, £9.99 to Europe and £14.99 to the rest of the world.

Can I send it to someone else?

Of course. Many people send it to a teacher they'd like to thank. On the checkout page, put their name and address under Delivery. Your card address can be different.

How does the message in the front work?

Just above the button on this page there's a box for the name Kathryn should write to, and one for your message of up to 200 characters. She writes it in by hand. If you leave them blank, the book is signed by Kathryn with no message.

Can I order more than one?

Yes, up to five books per person. Each book is its own order, so each one can have its own message and its own address.

How long is the offer open?

Until midnight UK time on Sunday 11 October 2026, or until the books run out, whichever comes first.

Do I have to watch the episode?

No, the gift is yours either way. We'd love you to, though. Watching and subscribing is how Viv's conversation reaches more teachers.
